Mahr's Brau - Distinctive, upstanding and genuine

Tradition and craftsmanship, these are not just selling points, and most definitely not myth. We are a family owned and operated business, run with conviction and passion for over four generations. We’ve been doing it simply for the sheer pleasure and enjoyment of our work. And because we have a very specific idea of what an outstanding beer must have: Character.

We leave the cheap beer to the mass production industry. We don’t get bent out of shape over producing a few more hectoliters. On the contrary, we are a proud, yet not sooo small, private brewery in Upper Franconia. For centuries we have been calling Bamberg’s Wunderburg our home. Family-owned and firmly rooted in the region since 1895. Then, as now, committed to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. We enjoy our success, but always remain fully aware of our responsibility.

We work with confidence in our age-old craft, and can therefore keep a clear head for the present. We are inquisitive and move forward with new ideas for the future. Because, when it’s all said and done, pairing the art of our brewing tradition with the sophistication modern technology (along with the occasional surprise) you can truly taste the difference in each of our nine Mahr’s beers.

Today a Hell beer, tomorrow a U beer, the day after tomorrow a Weisse beer…Each one different. And each genuine Mahr!

This might sound a little rough, but we have a heartfelt dislike for soulless, watered-down swill that’s belched out of an industrial boiler. That’s why we brew our beers only with the finest ingredients. We are devoted to the art of brewing and allow each of our specialties the exact amount of time needed, in order to craft these wholesome ingredients into a remarkably tasting beer.
It may well be that this is old fashioned, but this is why each one of our nine varieties of beer are always, as they should be – fresh, wholesome and distinctive. On top of that, our brewers are pretty curious. They’re always happy to try out new ideas; that’s why Mahr’s Bräu is regularly coming out with beerishly good extra varieties.

Mahrs Bräu Radler (Shandy)
Once a classic, always a classic.
What else can we say about a Radler? It was traditionally made as a refreshing boost for tired cyclists, but to know the taste is to love it. Unfortunately, there are Radlers out there on the market committing real crimes against the honor of beer – and against good taste. The tangy, fruity mix of lemon/lime soda with beer can only really taste good when all the ingredients are selected with the utmost care and compatibility. Because to us, simply dumping two sub-par tastes together in a bottle doesn’t give this classic the respect it deserves. With Mahr’s, you get a refreshingly delicious tasting Radler every time.

Mahrs Bräu Bock Beer

Beer sensory characteristics: Abundant yet delicate, the lovely white lacework of the head rises from the glass. Its refined brilliance and golden amber hue primes the glowing enjoyment of a quality, high gravity beer. The zest of a pure, high-grade hops fragrance complements a pleasantly malty aroma, inspiring memories of a summer breeze rolling across a field of barley. Velvety, seemingly viscous, it glides smoothly over the tongue. Atypical of a Bock, is its well-fermented, lean, hops accented character, which remains distinct as it slowly fades in the finish. Experts and lovers of bock beer highly anticipate each strong-beer season beginning every October.

Der Weisse Bock (Wheat/White Bock)

Beer sensory characteristics: The Weisse Bock is truly a rarity, and traditionally brings joy to connoisseurs each year after Ash Wednesday. Its foamy head takes center stage: lightly cream-colored, robust, and firm. The eye is drawn to its dark, lightly red-tinged, brown color and cascading veil of yeast. A complex fruitiness, a delicate bouquet of yeast, and a special malt fragrance surge gently into the nose. The taste: a subtle maltiness, fresh and tingling, with a hint of sweetness. The finish has a light, mildly bitter, full-bodied taste, paired with a pleasant rich texture. Mahr's Brau Quality

How do ya’ make a good beer? Well, it should at least taste good! Okay, we are not exactly people of many words here in Upper Franconia. But this plays no role when it comes to our beer. It’s been tasting great since 1670. Why? First of all, we are brewers with a passion. Second, because we carry our old world craftsmanship, as well as our hometown heritage, close to our hearts. Third, we work with a reputable respect for our natural ingredients. And last but not least, because we feel that Mahr’s Bräu in Bamberg’s Wunderburg is one of the most beautiful locations in the world.

That’s the way it is, and the way it should be. Prost!
